Canadian broadcaster and curler Cathy Gauthier acknowledges the challenges San Francisco curlers face playing on hockey ice. During the 2019 World Men’s Curling Championship broadcast Gauthier quotes Olympian Don Bartlett, “There is no weekend in the States that you can’t find a ‘spiel to play in and it’s not just the northern states—San Francisco, Hollywood.” Gauthier continues, “They’re all playing in hockey arenas on pretty sketchy ice, but it has built the sport while they are building their financial ability to build curling clubs.”
